I SAID NO – CEFALU’ 2023
This work is dedicated to women, girls and children who were victims of feminicide and violence. This unpainted body, though not dead, represents everything which goes unseen: the body of women, their soul, their feelings, all that can’t be seen though the eyes of men. We don’t manage to see women, their rights. We don’t manage to hear their scream. Danilo Dolci said that “Everybody grows only if dreamt about” and I would like to add “Each woman exists only if seen”. The woman I have not portrayed is not a victim or a prey: she is extraordinary, free to wear what she wants, go where she likes and express all that she has inside. She can do any job, she’s liberated, enjoys equal opportunities with men. As a man I will clearly never be able to live and observe from a woman’s perspective what being a woman meant throughout the years and the centuries, and what it means now in different societies. I am proud of being able to take a stand and do it with a painting because this is my language.
